Astralis have secured a spot in the DreamHack Open Fall upper bracket final, where they will face the winner of BIG vs. Vitality, while fnatic will continue their run through the lower bracket.
Astralis, who last lost a series on September 30 against HEROIC, a team they beat in an action-packed series in their DreamHack Open Fall series opener, march onto the tournament's upper bracket final undefeated after a 2-1 semi-final victory over fnatic.
The Danes are now waiting for the winner of the other upper bracket semi-final, which will pit Vitality and BIG on Thursday at 13:00 , while fnatic now have to continue their DreamHack Open Fall run through the lower bracket, where they will face the victor of Sprout vs. HEROIC, a match scheduled to be played right after the aforementioned second upper bracket semi-final.
The match started on Inferno, Astralis’ map pick, and although it was fnatic who took the first pistol round on the attacking sides, the Danes imposed their will early on winning seven uncontested rounds. Not ready to give the half up, Jesper "JW" Wecksell and company hit back with six rounds of their own, to make it 7-7 going into the last round of the half, which Astralis were able to take off the back of doubles by Emil "Magisk" Reif and Nicolai "device" Reedtz.
Astralis increased their lead taking the second pistol round, making it 11-7 before fnatic could retaliate. Unable to follow it up, the Swedes were unable to regain control of the situation as the No.1 team in the world ranking went on to hit match point, 15-8. fnatic then won back-to-back clean rounds, not giving up a single death, to hit double digits, and then secured two more to start a comeback, but were stopped in their tracks as Astralis closed the first map out, 16-12.
The series then moved to Astralis’ pick, Dust2, where the Danes took a 3-0 lead on the attacking side, but fnatic were quick to bring it back to a tie. The then Swedes doubled down, taking a 6-3 lead before their rivals called a tactical pause, and didn’t let up during the rest of the half, reaching double digits to go up 10-5 at the switch. Three USP kills by Patrick "es3tag" Hansen helped Astralis win the second pistol round, which they were then able to follow up, but with rifles in hand fnatic once again took control, closing out the map 16-7 to tie the series up 1-1.
Astralis won their fourth pistol round on the attacking side of Overpass with a play on the B site, going up 3-0 before the first buy round. fnatic were able to get on the board once they got their hands on rifles, but another successful B play by Astralis kept them in control early on as they went on to dominate the first half 11-4. Another pistol round win by the Danes kept them on the fast track to victory as they went up 13-4. JW came out guns blazing with three kills in fnatic’s first buy round to keep the comeback dream alive, but would only score three rounds before going down 7-16 as Astralis secured a spot in the DreamHack Open Fall upper bracket final.
